Ἔκκληση πρὸς τὸ Ὑπουργεῖο Πολιτισμοῦ: Καλά τὰ ἐγκαίνια ὅλων τῶν τζαμιῶν, ἀλλὰ γιὰ τὸ φημολογούμενο «Παλάτι τοῦ Ὀδυσσέα» στὴν Ἰθάκη ὑπάρχει μέριμνα;
An Appeal to the Ministry of Culture: Plenty of Openings and Restorations Elsewhere — But What About the Alleged “Palace of Odysseus” in Ithaca?
Ἰθάκη: Ἕνας ἀρχαιολογικὸς χώρος μὲ τεράστια συμβολικὴ σημασία παραμένει ἐδῶ καὶ χρόνια χωρὶς τὴν προστασία καὶ τὴν ἀνάδειξη ποὺ θὰ ἔπρεπε
Πρὸς τὸ Ὑπουργεῖο Πολιτισμοῦ ἀπευθύνεται γιὰ μία ἀκόμη φορὰ ἕνα αὐτονόητο ἐρώτημα:
Καλά τὰ ἐγκαίνια καὶ οἱ ἀνακαινίσεις ὅλων τῶν θρησκευτικῶν μνημείων, ἀλλὰ γιὰ τὸ φημολογούμενο «Παλάτι τοῦ Ὀδυσσέα» στὴν Ἰθάκη ὑπάρχει μέριμνα;
Ἔχει ἡ πολιτεία σχέδιο γιὰ ἕναν ἀρχαιολογικὸ χῶρο ποὺ συνδέεται μὲ μία ἀπὸ τὶς πιὸ ἀναγνωρίσιμες μορφὲς τῆς παγκόσμιας πολιτιστικῆς κληρονομιᾶς;
Γιατὶ, ἐὰν πράγματι ὁ χῶρος στὴ «Σχολὴ Ὁμήρου» φιλοξενεῖ τὰ κατάλοιπα τοῦ μυκηναϊκοῦ ἀνακτορικοῦ συγκροτήματος ποὺ ἔχει συνδεθεῖ μὲ τὴν παράδοση τοῦ Ὀδυσσέα, τότε δὲν μιλάμε γιὰ ἕνα ἀκόμη μνημεῖο τῆς Ἑλλάδας.
Μιλάμε γιὰ τὴν Ἰθάκη τοῦ Ὁμήρου.
Μιλάμε γιὰ ἕναν τόπο ποὺ θὰ μποροῦσε νὰ ἀποτελεῖ παγκόσμιο σημείο ἀναφορᾶς γιὰ τὴν ἀρχαιολογία, τὴν ἱστορία, τὴ λογοτεχνία καὶ τὸν πολιτιστικὸ τουρισμό.
Κι ὅμως, ὁ χῶρος παραμένει ἐδῶ καὶ χρόνια σὲ κατάσταση ἀναμονῆς. Σύμφωνα μὲ τὴν πρόσφατη παρέμβαση τοῦ ἱστορικοῦ ἐρευνητῆ καὶ συγγραφέα Λάζαρου Τσόλκα, ἡ προσπάθεια γιὰ τὴν προστασία καὶ τὴν ἀνάδειξη τοῦ μυκηναϊκοῦ ἀνακτορικοῦ συγκροτήματος παραμένει στάσιμη ἀπὸ τὸ 2009, χωρὶς νὰ ἔχουν ὁλοκληρωθεῖ οἱ ἀπαραίτητες ὁριστικὲς μελέτες γιὰ τὴν προστασία, τὰ στέγαστρα καὶ τὴν προσβασιμότητα.
Τὸ θέμα ἐπανέρχεται τώρα στὸ προσκήνιο μὲ ἀνοιχτὸ ὑπόμνημα πρὸς τὴν Ὑπουργὸ Πολιτισμοῦ Λίνα Μενδώνη, μὲ κοινοποίηση στὸ Γραφεῖο τοῦ Πρωθυπουργοῦ, στοὺς βουλευτὲς καὶ στὶς τοπικὲς ἀρχές.
Τὸ αἴτημα εἶναι συγκεκριμένο καὶ δὲν χρειάζεται μεγάλες ἐξαγγελίες.
Χρειάζεται πράξη.
Χρειάζεται χρηματοδότηση τῶν ὁριστικῶν μελετῶν, ὥστε τὸ ἔργο νὰ μπορέσει νὰ διεκδικήσει εὐρωπαϊκὴ χρηματοδότηση μέσω ΕΣΠΑ ἢ ΠΕΠ.
Χρειάζεται συνεργασία τοῦ Ὑπουργείου Πολιτισμοῦ, τῆς Περιφέρειας Ἰονίων Νήσων καὶ τοῦ Δήμου Ἰθάκης, μὲ μία σαφὴ προγραμματικὴ σύμβαση.
Καὶ χρειάζεται, ἐπιτέλους, ἡ Ἰθάκη νὰ γίνει τόπος διεθνοῦς ἐπιστημονικοῦ διαλόγου μὲ τὴ διοργάνωση διεθνοῦς ἀρχαιολογικοῦ συνεδρίου.
Ἀπὸ τὰ λόγια στὴν πράξη
Ἡ Ἑλλάδα δὲν ἔχει ἔλλειψη ἀπὸ πολιτιστικὰ σύμβολα. Ἔχει, ὅμως, χρέος νὰ προστατεύει αὐτὰ ποὺ μποροῦν νὰ μιλήσουν στὸν κόσμο γιὰ τὴν ἴδια τὴν ἱστορία της.
Καὶ ἡ Ἰθάκη εἶναι μία τέτοια περίπτωση.
Ὁ Ὀδυσσέας δὲν εἶναι ἁπλῶς ἕνας ἥρωας τῆς Ὁδύσσειας. Εἶναι ἕνα ἀπὸ τὰ πιὸ ἀναγνωρίσιμα ὀνόματα τῆς παγκόσμιας λογοτεχνίας. Ἡ Ἰθάκη, ὡς πατρίδα τοῦ Ὀδυσσέα στὴν ὁμηρικὴ παράδοση, διαθέτει ἕνα πολιτιστικὸ κεφάλαιο ποὺ δύσκολα συγκρίνεται μὲ ἄλλους τόπους.
Ἄν, λοιπόν, ὑπάρχει ἕνας χῶρος ποὺ ἡ ἀρχαιολογικὴ ἔρευνα ἔχει συνδέσει μὲ τὸ μυκηναϊκὸ ἀνακτορικὸ κέντρο τῆς Ἰθάκης, τότε ἡ ἐγκατάλειψή του δὲν εἶναι ἁπλῶς μία τοπικὴ ὑπόθεση.
Εἶναι ζήτημα πολιτιστικῆς πολιτικῆς.
Κι ἐδῶ βρίσκεται τὸ πραγματικὸ ἐρώτημα:
Πόσο ἀκόμη θὰ περιμένει ἡ «Σχολὴ Ὁμήρου»;
Πόσα χρόνια πρέπει νὰ περάσουν γιὰ νὰ ὑπάρξει ὁριστικὴ μελέτη, προστασία τοῦ χώρου, κατάλληλη πρόσβαση καὶ μία σοβαρὴ προσπάθεια ἀνάδειξής του;
Ἡ Ἰθάκη δὲν ζητάει χάρη.
Ζητάει νὰ προστατευθεῖ ἕνα κομμάτι τῆς πολιτιστικῆς της κληρονομιᾶς καὶ νὰ τοῦ δοθεῖ ἡ θέση ποὺ τοῦ ἀναλογεῖ.
Ἂν ὁ κόσμος ἔρχεται στὴν Ἰθάκη γιὰ νὰ ἀναζητήσει τὸν Ὀδυσσέα, ἡ Ἑλλάδα ὀφείλει νὰ τοῦ δείξει καὶ τὴν Ἰθάκη ποὺ διασώζει τὴν ἱστορία του.
Τὸ Ὑπουργεῖο Πολιτισμοῦ καλείται πλέον νὰ ἀπαντήσει μὲ ἔργα.
Γιατὶ τὸ «Παλάτι τοῦ Ὀδυσσέα», ὅπως καὶ νὰ ὀνομάζεται τελικὰ ἀπὸ τὴν ἐπιστήμη, δὲν μπορεῖ νὰ παραμένει ἕνα ξεχασμένο κεφάλαιο στὴν Ἰθάκη.

Ithaca: A site of enormous symbolic and cultural importance has been left waiting for the protection and recognition it deserves
There is a simple question that needs to be addressed to the Greek Ministry of Culture:
While the state finds the means to inaugurate and restore religious monuments across the country, is there any real plan for the alleged “Palace of Odysseus” in Ithaca?
Is there a concrete strategy for a site associated with one of the most recognizable figures in world literature and cultural heritage?
Because if the archaeological remains at the “School of Homer” are indeed those of the Mycenaean palace complex traditionally associated with Odysseus, then this is not simply another archaeological site in Greece.
It is Homer’s Ithaca.
It is a place with the potential to become an international reference point for archaeology, history, literature and cultural tourism.
And yet, the site has remained in limbo for years. According to a recent intervention by historian and researcher Lazaros Tsolkas, efforts to protect and develop the Mycenaean palace complex have remained stalled since 2009, with essential final studies for protection, roofing and visitor access still incomplete.
The issue has now been brought directly to the political leadership through an open memorandum addressed to Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, with copies sent to the Prime Minister’s Office, Members of Parliament and local authorities.
The request is straightforward.
It does not require grand speeches.
It requires action.
It requires funding for the completion of the necessary final studies so that the project can subsequently seek European funding through programmes such as the NSRF and regional development funds.
It requires cooperation between the Ministry of Culture, the Region of the Ionian Islands and the Municipality of Ithaca through a clear programme agreement.
And, finally, Ithaca deserves to become a place of international scholarly discussion, including through the organization of an international archaeological conference on the island.
From promises to action
Greece does not lack cultural symbols.
What it must not lack is the political will to protect the places capable of telling the world its history.
Ithaca is undoubtedly one of those places.
Odysseus is not merely a hero from the Odyssey. He is one of the most recognizable figures in world literature. Ithaca, as the homeland of Odysseus in the Homeric tradition, possesses a cultural identity of extraordinary international significance.
If archaeological research has identified the area at the “School of Homer” as a possible Mycenaean palatial center of Ithaca, then allowing the site to remain neglected cannot be treated merely as a local issue.
It is a matter of cultural policy.
And this leads to the real question:
How much longer will the “School of Homer” have to wait?
How many more years must pass before the necessary studies are completed, the archaeological remains are properly protected, visitor access is improved and a serious programme for the site's presentation and development is put in place?
Ithaca is not asking for a favor.
It is asking for a piece of its cultural heritage to be protected and given the importance it deserves.
If people from around the world travel to Ithaca in search of Odysseus, Greece should be able to show them an Ithaca that also protects and presents the heritage associated with his story.
The Ministry of Culture now has an opportunity to respond — not merely with statements, but with concrete action.
Because the so-called “Palace of Odysseus”, whatever its final archaeological interpretation may ultimately be, should not remain a forgotten chapter on the island of Ithaca.
